Genetic Counseling Quick Facts

  • Genetic counseling, including genetic risk assessment, is indicated for close female relatives (including mothers, sisters, aunts and cousins) of a male with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Because of the complexity of genetic testing (including diagnostic testing, carrier testing, and prenatal testing), education about testing, informed consent, and review of results is often undertaken by genetics professionals.
  • If you do not have an existing relationship with genetics professionals, the National Society of Genetic Counselors provides a database of genetic counselors who accept referrals at www.nsgc.org.
